Chapter 3 · The nose

The recall a Beagle can have

Not a Labrador's. But a good one, in the right places, built like this.

Build itA fresh word or whistle, paired with the best food, indoors, twenty times a day. Then the garden. Then a 10 metre line on a harness in a field.
Pay, then releaseChicken, cheese, then 'go sniff'. A recall that ends the fun gets outbid. One that predicts more fun wins.
Line stays onNear roads, livestock, deer and rabbits, in woodland, and in new places. A seatbelt, not a failure.
When they goDon't chase. Run the other way, calling. GPS on the harness, microchip current.

The scent brain switches off the listening brain. Design, not defiance.

Chapter 4 · The body

The signs that can't wait

Two of the breed's emergencies get missed because the dog is 'just off colour'.

You seeWhat it meansWhat to do
Fever, stiff painful neck, head low, aged 6–18 monthsBeagle pain syndromeVet today; say the words
Hunched back, crying when lifted, won't jumpDisc diseaseCrate rest, vet today
Back legs wobbly, knuckling or goneSpinal emergencyVet now; hours matter

The sign checker turns what you're seeing into watch, vet this week, vet today or vet now.

Chapter 8 · The voice

What kind of noise is it?

Three voices, three causes, three fixes. Shouting joins in on all of them.

  • Howls for an hour after you leave: separation distress. The alone-time ladder, a chew, company while you build it
  • Howls at the fence all afternoon: boredom. A nose job before work, a long chew, no unsupervised garden
  • Bays at the hedge at dusk: found something. In at dusk, pay quiet, more nose work
  • Bays at you while you cook: demand. Wait for a second of quiet, then pay. It must never work
  • A long bay in the woods, then gone: the breed. That's why the line is on

You can't punish a bay out of a hound. You can pay silence and remove the stage.

Chapter 5 · Food

The scavenger rules

Management beats training for a dog who eats everything. Then the poisons.

Weigh itGrams, not cups. Two meals a day in a slow bowl or scattered on the grass. Treats under ten per cent, from the ration. Neutered: cut by 20–30 per cent.
Manage itLidded bins, clear counters, a kitchen door that shuts, bags off the floor. 'Leave it' and 'drop' trained with trades.
Ring the vet nowChocolate, xylitol, grapes and raisins, onions, macadamias, mouldy food, bread dough, human medicines. Don't wait for signs.
Same-day vetRepeated vomiting, no poo, painful belly after a corn cob, a stone, a sock. Early is an operation, late is a rupture.

A Beagle who begs is not hungry. A Beagle is always begging.

An adult Beagle touching noses with a puppy

From the humans behind Nicole & Nora

We live with two miniature dachshunds, which is closer to a Beagle than you might think: a hound's nose, a hound's stubborn streak, and the same back that needs protecting. The questions that fill our inbox from Beagle owners are the same ones every time: the recall, the howling, the weight, and the ears. So we wrote the handbook we'd want if a Beagle came home tomorrow.

It's honest about the breed. Beagles follow their noses, sing when they're left, eat anything and need managing for life. They're also the merriest, most tolerant, most companionable dogs there are, and they do not need a firm hand; they need a fair one and a long line. This is the handbook that lets you have the second part without being ambushed by the first.

Force-free, always. Educational content, never a substitute for your vet.

Questions

What format is the handbook?

An interactive HTML handbook you download straight after purchase and open in any browser on your phone, tablet or computer. No app, no login. Twelve chapters with tools to tap, slide and tick, flip cards, quick checks, a true-or-myth test with a certificate, and printable charts. Your progress and checklists save on your device.

Is it for 13-inch or 15-inch Beagles?

Both. The temperament and the health are the same; only the height and weight differ, and the portion calculator takes your dog's own weight. Everything on the nose, the voice, food, training and health applies to every Beagle.

My Beagle already howls when left. Will this fix it?

It will give you the method: sorting distress from boredom from demand, the alone-time ladder, the enrichment that takes the edge off, and the honest line on when you need a trainer who does separation work. Mild and moderate cases respond well to the approach. A dog in full panic needs a professional alongside it, and the handbook says so.

Does it replace my vet or a trainer?

No. The sign checker is a triage tool that tells you how urgent things are, not a diagnosis, and the behaviour chapters tell you clearly when to get a professional. Everything in the handbook is educational.

What if it's not for me?

Email us within 7 days of purchase and we'll refund it in full. Details in our refund policy.

Is it force-free?

Yes. Nothing in the handbook uses fear, pain or intimidation. A Beagle trained with pressure learns to keep their distance, which is exactly the wrong lesson for a hound; the handbook works with the breed's food drive and nose, not against them.

Nose down, tail up, no surprises
