Chapter 4 · Joints and the limp

The two-week rule

Elbows, hips and cruciates are the breed's weak spots. Bone cancer is its biggest killer. Both start as a limp.

You seeWhat it meansWhat to do
Limp that comes and goes, stiff after restDysplasia, arthritis, panosteitis in a puppyVet visit, film it, lean weight
Sudden back-leg lameness after a skid or twistLikely cruciateRest, vet this week
Limp not fully resolved after two weeks of restOsteosarcoma until an X-ray says otherwiseX-ray, not more rest
Won't bear weight, or a leg gave way with a crackPossible fracture through weakened boneEmergency vet today

Date every limp. In this breed, two weeks is the line.

Chapter 3 · Socialisation

Reading the stillness

Most breeds back away or bark when worried. Rottweilers go still and hard, and owners read it as calm.

Right distanceSoft body, curious, taking treats. Watching a busy street from a bench, one calm adult dog, a stranger walking past while nothing happens.
Too closeBody stops moving, mouth closes, eye fixes. Add distance, let them look, pay for looking.
The muzzleTreats in the basket, face pushed in, muzzle goes away. Thirty seconds a day, weeks before you fasten it.
NeverForced greetings, being passed around a party, dragged up to strangers. That is how a bad decider is made.

A Rottweiler puppy allowed to observe and retreat becomes an adult who watches and decides well.

Chapter 8 · Guarding and the reputation

Rumble, or growl?

Many Rottweilers groan when they're content, and it sounds like a growl to visitors. Some Rottweilers guard, and it starts quietly.

  • Loose body, soft eye, leaning in, groaning while stroked: the Rottie rumble. Contentment.
  • Stiff body, closed mouth, hard stare, still: the real thing. Add distance.
  • Hand near the bowl adds something better and leaves, every meal: guarding prevented
  • Items traded up, never snatched
  • Stiffening over food near a child, twice: feed behind a gate today, behaviourist this week
  • A snap is a bite that missed: professional help now

Never punish either sound. A Rottweiler taught not to growl is a Rottweiler who bites without warning.

Chapter 7 · Adolescence

Neutering: what the research says

Rottweilers have more data on neutering than most breeds, and it points one way.

Before a yearHigher rates of joint disease including cruciate rupture. Several times the lifetime risk of osteosarcoma in one study of the breed. No reliable effect on adolescent behaviour.
After 18–24 monthsSkeleton mature. Risks weighed against real benefits such as pyometra prevention in bitches.
AlternativesOvary-sparing hysterectomy or vasectomy: pregnancy protection without the hormone loss. Ask.
The defaultSix months because that's when it's usually done is not a reason in this breed.

Have the conversation with your vet. The decision is yours; the evidence is in the chapter.

Two Rottweilers sitting together on a forest path

From the humans behind Nicole & Nora

We live with two miniature dachshunds, which is about as far from a Rottweiler as a dog gets. But the questions that fill our inbox from Rottweiler owners are the same ones every time: the puppy who bites too hard, the adolescent who has started to stare, the bowl, the limp, and the vet who wants to neuter at six months. So we wrote the handbook we'd want if a Rottweiler came home tomorrow.

It's honest about the breed. Rottweilers watch and decide, play rough, take three years to grow up, carry a reputation, and have a body that needs protecting and a life that is shorter than it should be. They're also calm, devoted, funny dogs who lean on your legs and would follow you anywhere, and they do not need a firm hand; they need a fair one. This is the handbook that lets you have the second part without being ambushed by the first.

Force-free, always. Educational content, never a substitute for your vet.

Questions

What format is the handbook?

An interactive HTML handbook you download straight after purchase and open in any browser on your phone, tablet or computer. No app, no login. Twelve chapters with tools to tap, slide and tick, flip cards, quick checks, a true-or-myth test with a certificate, and printable charts. Your progress and checklists save on your device.

My Rottweiler is already guarding. Will this fix it?

It will give you the management for today, the prevention that stops it starting in the next dog, and the honest line on when you need a professional. Mild, early guarding in a puppy responds well to the trade-up and hand-in-bowl methods in the handbook. A dog who is guarding towards a child, or who has snapped, needs a clinical behaviourist and a vet, and the handbook says so.

Is the neutering advice up to date?

The adolescence and cancer chapters set out the research on early neutering in Rottweilers, including the bone cancer and joint studies, and the alternatives such as ovary-sparing surgery and vasectomy. It is written to help you have a proper conversation with your vet, not to replace it.

Does it replace my vet or a trainer?

No. The lameness sign checker is a triage tool that tells you how urgent things are, not a diagnosis, and the behaviour chapters tell you clearly when to get a professional. Everything in the handbook is educational.

What if it's not for me?

Email us within 7 days of purchase and we'll refund it in full. Details in our refund policy.

Is it force-free?

Yes, and for this breed that matters more than for almost any other. Nothing in the handbook uses fear, pain or intimidation. A Rottweiler trained with pressure stops warning before it bites; the handbook works with the breed's calm intelligence, not against it.

Calm mind, loyal heart, no surprises

Read the socialisation chapter tonight. Learn the two-week limp rule tomorrow. The rest of the years get easier, and longer, from there.
